arizonaArizona head coach Mike Stoops is set to be given a three year contract extension. His previous contract was set to expire in 2010. Stoops and the Wildcats are coming of their first bowl appearance and win since 1998.

oregonHighly rated high school quarterback Tajh Boyd (6′ 1″, 210 lbs.) has Ohio St. and Oregon as his top two colleges of choice. Oregon? Don’t they have enough quarterbacks? And, in case you’re unaware, Boyd has had knee troubles—is Oregon the place to be for him with knee troubles?

uscUSC running back C.J. Gable may leave for the NFL at season’s end. Gable says he’s still considering his options and will give it more thought once the Rose Bowl is over and done with.

washingtonWe all know the 2008 Washington Husky football team was bad, but, just in case you missed it, there’s a Web site dedicated to the accomplishments (or lack thereof) of being the first-ever Pac-10 team to go 0-12.

Arizona head coach Mike Stoops and senior quarterback Willie Tuitama have finally led the Wildcats to a bowl game—against BYU from the Mountain West Conference.

Many had left Arizona for dead. After all, this is the same Mountain West Conference that won six of the seven regular season games they played against the Pac-10. This is the same BYU team that can claim two of those wins, who was 10-2 overall on the season and was ranked No. 17 going into the Las Vegas Bowl.

“We had a goal before the season started and tonight we finally reached it,” Tuitama said. “I’ll never forget to finally be in a bowl game with this group of seniors, on this team.”

Tuitama wasn’t just in a bowl game with his fellow seniors, he led the team to a 31-21 victory when no one gave them a chance. He led the team to their first bowl victory and winning season since 1998.

Willie Tuitama, the game’s MVP, finished 24-for-35 for 325 yards and two touchdowns. He added a 6-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.

The Wildcates defense forced BYU quarterback Max Hall to scramble much of the game, lose two fumbles and throw an interception.

It was a win on many levels for the Arizona Wildcats who finished the season 8-5. But many still wonder: did the Las Vegas Bowl win do enough to keep Mike Stoops as the Wildcats’ head coach?

Pac-10 Links: Beavers get help at RB, Stanford women in volleyball championship, more

December 20, 2008 at 4:58 pm
Written by Dennis Greenfield

arizonaFormer Sacramento and New Mexico State head coach Reggie Theus recently told the Arizona Republic that he would be interested in being the head coach at Arizona.

That’s not to say there is actually going to be a vacancy at Arizona. Current interim coach Russ Pennell has the Wildcats sitting at 7-3—including a win over then #4 Gonzaga last Sunday.

oregon-stYesterday the Oregon State Beavers received some good news from head coach Mike Riley; running back Jeremy Francis will, in fact, join the team for the Sun Bowl. This adds a little more depth to the Beavers depleted running back corp. If you recall, Francis had taken an indefinite leave of absence from the team in order to tend to his ailing mother.

calThe Cal Bears are facing the Miami Hurricanes in the Emerald Bowl, but they will not be facing Miami’s starting quarter back. Starting QB Robert Marve will not be playing because of a violation of team academic rules. It seems as though Marve missed more than four classes.

stanfordStanford women’s volleyball team held off Texas and will face Penn St. this evening in the championship game! Penn St. remains unbeaten while Stanford is 31-3.

Reports have been floating around today that Arizona head football coach, Mike Stoops, is on Iowa State’s short list of possible candidates to replace departed Gene Chizik. Chizik has become the new Auburn head coach.

Stoops, who has led the Wildcates to face BYU in the Las Vegas bowl, was asked about the rumors. Of course, he had, “no comment.”

UA athletic director, Jim Livengood, has also said he has not heard of any reports of Stoops interviewing with Iowa State - including not hearing anything from Stoops himself.
