Justin Kahut didn’t want to be the reason Oregon State’s Rose Bowl dream died. He didn’t have to be.

With time expiring, Kahut drilled a 24 yard field goal right through the uprights giving the Beavers the 19-17 victory.

“I didn’t see the game ending like that,” Kahut said. “I didn’t want to not go to the Rose Bowl because of me. I wanted a second chance, and I got it. I felt good. This is the way it was supposed to happen.”

Just minutes before, Kahut missed the potential game tying extra point try, and it seemed as though Arizona might squash the Rose Bowl dreams of the Beavers.

After the missed extra point try, it didn’t look as though Oregon State would get another chance to redeem themselves. Arizona needed to run out a little more than three minutes and the game was there’s.

It was the Beavers defense who stepped up and stopped Wildcat’s RB Keola Antolin two yards short and forcing fourth down.

After the Wildcats punt, Oregon State took over on their own 20 yard line with 1:19 to go.

Could the Beavers once again overcome adversity? Would their Rose Bowl dreams stay alive?

Justin Kahut held the answer on the tip of his foot. He walked on to the field, waited for the snap, and then calmly split the same uprights he had just missed a few minutes earlier.

“The whole team believed in me,” Kahut said. “That’s hard to do.”

Pac-10 rushing leader, Jaquizz Rodgers, was knocked out of the game in the first quarter. But the Beavers made due without him.

Backup QB, Sean Canfield, took the starting role and helped lead the Beavers to their comeback win. He passed for 224 yards and one touchdown.

Oregon State still has one test left as they face in-state rival Oregon in the Civil War on Nov. 29.

The Ducks will be looking for some major payback as the Beavers have taken the last two Civil War meetings. Add to that the fact it was Oregon State who crushed Oregon’s Rose Bowl dreams by beating the then 9-1 Ducks in 2000. Oregon would love to return the favor to this year’s Beaver team.

Pac-10 Game Recaps (Nov. 8)

Written by Dennis Greenfield

Stan 28 UO 35 - The Oregon Ducks won their seventh game of the season, yet their fans don’t appear to be very happy about it. Jeremiah Johnson and LeGarrette Blount carried the load for Oregon as the Ducks once again rushed for over 300 yards.

OSU 34 UCLA 6 - The Beavers have done it! They’ve cracked the Top 25 and deservedly so. After starting slow in the first half, the Beavs played well in the second half. They traveled to UCLA and beat the Bruins and keep their Rose Bowl hopes alive. Oregon State will need wins against Cal, Arizona, and Oregon for a return trip to Pasadena.

UA 59 WSU 28 - While Washington State showed they have a little fight left in them, it was not nearly enough as Arizona never let up and scored at will. The win clinched the Wildcats their first bowl appearance in a decade.

Cal 3 USC 17 - USC’s defense shines once again as they hold Cal to only 165 yards of total offense and 3 points. The Trojans offense, however, managed only 17 points and is still looking somewhat average. The Trojans did manage to gain a little in the polls.

ASU 39 UW 19 - The Washington Huskies looked as thought they might find a way to win a game this season. Unfortunately they allowed 16 fourth quarter points to a Sun Devil team who is struggling themselves. With the win against the Huskies, Arizona State ended a six game skid.

Arizona basketball coach, Lute Olsen, has announced he will retire.

“This was not a decision that was made lightly,” Olson said. “I’ve had a wonderful run at The University of Arizona. I leave with a great sense of pride in what we have accomplished here.”

Olsen became head coach 25 five years ago, and since that time has led the Wildcats to 25 straight NCAA Tournament appearences, including one national title.

AP Top 25 - 10/5/2008

October 5, 2008 at 10:18 pm
Written by Dennis Greenfield

USC was able to move up one spot after beating Oregon. The lose dropped Oregon from the Top 25.

Cal received quite a few more votes this week. They may not jump into the Top 25 while being idle this week (though stranger things have happened), but a solid win over Arizona could potentially push them in.

Speaking of Arizona, they’ve received a few votes themselves. If Arizona can handle Stanford this week and then take care of business against Cal I don’t see why they cannot crack the Top 25.

AP Top 25

Arizona Quietly Sitting at the Top

October 5, 2008 at 12:00 am
Written by Dennis Greenfield

Don’t look now, but Arizona (2-0 conf./4-1 overall) coach Mike Stoops just might be quieting some critics as he has his team sitting atop the Pac-10 standings.

Arizona is playing some downright stubborn ball so far this season. The No. 2 ranked defense in the country is allowing just over 15 points per game and 221 yards of offense.

And don’t even think about passing against this team—the Wildcats currently have the No. 1 ranked pass defense in the land.
