After losing to the Ducks on Friday and Saturday, the Fresno State Bull Dogs were able to avoid the weekend sweep by defeating Oregon 10-3 on Sunday afternoon.
The Ducks were able to jump on the scoreboard first when Eddy Rodriguez scored from third base after the Bull Dogs pitcher fielded a ground ball and threw wide of the first baseman.
That lead didn’t last long, however.
At the top of the third inning Fresno State’s bats started to come alive. They were able to score six runs on five hits capped with om Mendonca knocking a three-run homer over right-center. Mendonca would later homer in the ninth for his second on the day.
For Oregon, Antony Kreitz homered in the bottom of the ninth, but the rally stopped there.
The Ducks’ left-hand pitcher Bennett Whitmore takes the loss giving up seven runs on six hits.
Today just was not the Ducks’ day, but they did win the weekend series with Fresno State by winning 2 out of three games.

It took all of the nine innings, but the Oregon Ducks won their first home opener in 28 years defeating the 15th ranked Fresno State Bull Dogs 1-0.
Fresno State, the defending national champions, came to a sold-out PK Park in Eugene, Oregon not knowing what to expect from a school that was without baseball for the past 28 years. They now know the Ducks, lead by coach George Horton, are a team on a mission.
Freshman Tyler Anderson got the start, as he did in Oregon’s season opener at Saint Mary’s last Friday, and immediately took command. His placement and pitch selection were outstanding. Anderson pitched into the ninth inning and faced 30 batters. He gave up only six hits, walked two, struck out five and allowed no runs.
Junior left-hander Ryan Fleckenstein entered the ninth inning with the game stalled at 0-0. He only faced three batters and put all three away.
In the bottom of the ninth the Ducks worked themselves into a two-out holeābut then the rally was on.
Junior Eddy Rodriguez started it off with a single to right center. Next was Jett Hart who also knocked a single to right center, which advanced Rodriguez to third base.
With runners on first and third Andrew Schmidt came in to pinch hit. The count worked to full and with runners moving on the pitch, he belted a line drive single into right field and scored Eddy Rodriguez from third.
The Ducks win! The Ducks win!
Overall the Ducks’ bats weren’t hot, but they knocked ‘em around when it really mattered most. Jett Hart led the Ducks hitting going 2-4, the second, of course, being the game winner.
